The New York Wholesale Group has announced a voluntary recall of its Zaarah Herbals Shatavari Powder after tests revealed potential contamination with elevated levels of lead.
This recall affects consumers in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, where the product was distributed between October 21, 2022, and April 15, 2024.
The product, packaged in clear 100g (3.5oz) jars with a gold lid, prominently displays the name “ZAARAH HERBALS SHATAVARI POWDER” on the front. The affected batch, identified as Batch No: SR 04 with a manufacturing date of July 2022, can be found on the back panel of the jar.
The UPC for the product is 63502899940
Health Risks Associated with Lead Exposure
While short-term exposure to low levels of lead may not show immediate symptoms, the potential health risks are significant. Increased blood lead levels may be the only visible sign of exposure, but acute exposure to higher levels can lead to more severe symptoms.
Lead exposure can affect nearly every bodily system, with serious implications for both adults and children. For instance, chronic exposure in adults is linked to kidney dysfunction, hypertension, and increased mortality risk from cardiovascular diseases.
In children, prolonged exposure can result in permanent damage to the central nervous system, leading to learning disorders and developmental defects.
As of now, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the product recall. The decision to recall the Shatavari Powder was prompted by an analysis conducted by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection, which identified the elevated lead levels.
